'American Horror Story' Season 4 Will Be Very Different From 'Coven'; Cast Sarah Paulson Says Fans Won't Be Disappointed

"American Horror Story" season 4 will be drastically different from the "Coven" story arc as cast Sarah Paulson expressed optimism that fans of the show won't be disappointed.

In a video chat with GoldDerby, "American Horror Story" season 4 cast Sarah Paulson said: "I really think people are not going to be disappointed."

"It's going to be very different, I think, than last year but in all the best ways," she added.

"American Horror Story" season 4 cast Sarah Paulson, however, did not reveal any spoilers for the upcoming "Freak Show" story arc.

The 38-year-old actress has undergone several changes in the past three seasons of "American Horror Story." In the first season, she played psychic Billie Dean Howard, then reporter Lana Winters in "Asylum" and witch Cordelia Foxx in "Coven."

When asked if what role she finds most difficult to play, she told The Hollywood Reporter: "I would say in season two, it was twofold: One, when I had to simulate performing an abortion on myself, and two, playing a 75-year-old woman. That was very hard," she said.

"American Horror Story" season 4 cast Sarah Paulson explained that she didn't want to play a caricature of the character that she played and wanted to "hold on to who the character of Lana Winters."

"Also, I had the crazy makeup on that was terrifying, and I sent the photograph to my mother, and I was like: 'I guess you'll never see this. This is me at 75!'"

Meanwhiel, "American Horror Story" season 4 creator Ryan Murphy said that Sarah Paulson's role could be the most physically and emotionally taxing among the characters in the show.

He told Entertainment Weekly Radio that it's "the most challenging character I've ever created. I'm nervous for Sarah."

Meanwhile, he revealed that he will direct the season premiere. The last time he helmed an episode was back in season 1 for the pilot.

"I'm so excited for 'Freak Show,'" Ryan Murphy said, who promised viewers that "American Horror Story: Freak Show" will be a "super scary thrill ride."
