With a giant lead over South Korea, dark horses Algeria have gained a spot in the knockout stage. South Korea has qualified for several World Cups, but have not been able to advance into the final stages so far. But with so many Asian players playing in European Leagues and foreign coaches training teams around the world, it may not be long before an Asian team like S. Korea takes the Cup.
Algeria will move into second place in Group H after winning in Porto Alegre. Islam Slimani,Rafik Halliche and Abdelmoumene Djabou contributed to Algeria's 3-0 lead. At the start of the second half Son scored for Korea hoping for a comeback. But Yacine Brahimi put the game back to a 3-goal lead for the Algerians. With just 18 min to finish, South Korea's captain Koo scored a late goal that just wouldn't get them over to a victory. So Koo's goal was a consolation prize for the Koreans.
In the next match, Algeria will go head to head with Russia while Belgium will take on South Korea. All of these teams are capable of causing upsets, although Russia and Belgium are both strong forces to reckon with. However, with a good standing in Group H, Belgium are already through to the next round. But Korea will need nothing short of a Micracle for an entry into the 'round of 16'.
In the other Group H match, Algeria will play Russia looking for a single point from Fabio Capello's side. Algeria is well poised to go into the match with Russia with the strong momentum building from the match against South Korea.
In comparison, S. Korea has paid the price for a first half that 'slipped through their fingers.' Although they made improvements to their game in the second half, the Korean game could not get much worse with the Algerians pounding opportunities on target. On the whole, S. Korea's progress will depend not only on their performance against Belgium, but also on other results in the group. Even if a mathematical equation doesn't fit for S.Korean, it will have to be at least a minor micracle to keep them playing in Brazil World Cup 2014.
