Into The Woods is a Tony-award winning play that ran in both Broadway and the West End. The story takes characters from beloved fairy tales such as "Little Red Riding Hood," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Rapunzel ,"and "Cinderella."
There has been much buzz about Disney's upcoming film adaptation of Into The Woods. Much of it has stemmed from comments made by the musical's composer, Stephen Sondheim at New York city event.
He has been reported as saying that Disney is dialing down the sexual content, and other more adult themes of the musical. Specifically, a romantic encounter between Prince Charming and the Baker's Wife, the death of Rapunzel, and the sexual nature of Red Riding Hood and the Wolf's relationship.
"You will find in the movie that Rapunzel does not get killed, and the Prince does not sleep with the Baker's Wife . . . Disney said, we don't want Rapunzel to die, so we replotted it. I won't tell you what happens, but we wrote a new song to cover it . . ." Sondheim is reported to have said.
Devoted fans of the Broadway musical expressed their dismay through various social media sites.
But Sondheim has since retracted his earlier comments. In a statement to Playbill magazine, the composer said,"When the conversation with the teachers occurred, I had not yet seen a full rough cut of the movie. Coincidentally, I saw it immediately after leaving the meeting and, having now seen it a couple of times, I can happily report that it is not only a faithful adaptation of the show, it is a first-rate movie."
He continues, "And for those who care, the Prince's dalliance is still in the movie, and so is (the song) 'Any Moment'." The movie features an ensemble cast that includes stars such as Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, and Johnny Depp. It marks Disney's first attempt at a film version of a Broadway musical.
