South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi film "Snowpiercer" will be hitting US cinemas soon, according to Slashfilm.
Chris Evans stars in the movie as part of a surviving group of people forced to live in a train that protects the human race from a frozen Earth. The population within the train is broken into two societies, with the upper class living in luxury at the front of the train while the lower class in the rear. Evans leads a violent rebellion against the social order and brings a group of his peers through the train in an attempt to take control of the it's engine.
The political and societal allegory is Bong's fifth feature film, including "The Host," and "Mother." This time, however, the South Korean visionary adapted "Snowpiercer" from a French graphic novel.
Despite "Snowpiercer" being Bong's most technically ambitious work, Rolling Stone thinks the film is "a strong contender for the most exciting, visually striking and smartest action movie of the season." According to the publication, the movie is a "blockbuster for the international art-house crowd."
"Old Boy" director, Park Chan-wook, who had just started a production company in Korea, bought the rights to the movie after Bong started working on it following "The Host." The director enlisted Kelly Masterson ("Before the Devil Knows You're Dead") to work on the English dialogue of the film.
Although "Snowpiercer" was adapted from a French comic book by a Korean filmmaker, most of the characters speak in English. Bong wanted the characters to speak their own language. Chris Evans is joined by actors of different nationalities, such as Song Kang-ho, Go Ah-sung, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, Ewen Bremner, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt and Ed Harris.
"These are the last survivors of humanity. It would have been weird if they were all Korean," The acclaimed director explained to the Rolling Stone via a translator. "I hate it when I see a movie like "Memoirs of a Geisha" and you've got Chinese actresses speaking English and playing Japanese characters."
Bong solved the language barrier issue by having Chris Evans and the other characters use devices that simultaneously translate their words.
The release date for "Snowpiercer" in the US, however, has not been disclosed.
