The new movie will employ the talents screenwriters J. David Stern and David N. Weiss, who wrote the screenplay for the movies Shrek 2 and The Smurfs. The screenwriting duo also penned the scripts for Daddy Day Care, and Are We There Yet. Meanwhile, Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, The Guilt Trip) is set to direct.
The original movie's producers, Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld are back on board in Enchanted 2.
The original movie which was released in 2007 followed the exploits of Giselle, an animated fairy tale princess, who finds herself thrust in the live-action world of New York city. Giselle's innocence and naivete clash hilariously with the real-world cynicism and practicality of the Big Apple.
Amy Adams turned in a wonderful, comical performance of Giselle, while leading man Patrick Dempsey was dashing as a reluctant prince charming. James Marsden, Idina Menzel, Timothy Spall, and Susan Sarandon also shone in their supporting roles.
The movie also featured song-and-dance numbers that gave viewers memorable numbers such as "True Love's Kiss," "That's How You Know," "Happy Working Song," and "So Close."
Enchanted, which is considered as both a parody and a homage to Walt Disney's animated princess movies received much critical acclaim. It opened as the number 1 movie in the Thanksgiving weekend of 2007. It also grossed $340 million worldwide, received two Golden Globe nominations, and three Academy Award nominations.
In an interview with MTV in 2008, Patrick Dempsey revealed that he would like to see Giselle's sexual awakening in the Enchanted sequel.
When MTV asked Adams about Dempsey's proposed introduction of Giselle into the world of making babies, the 39-year old actress said, "I hope we don't explore that! That's not quite right for that audience. I don't know where they're planning to go with the sequel. The first film was discovering who she is, so we've seen that. I'd be curious to see what's next."
