Ian McKellen is set to play the role of famous detective Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming flick "Mr. Holmes." The detective is already 93-years-old in this movie, and the story will revolve around his experience solving a final case, as his superior intelligence begins to deteriorate with age.
The Hobbit star himself has tweeted a confirmation his role as the aging detective in this Sherlock Holmes movie. McKellen said, "Over 70 actors have previously played Sherlock Holmes. Now he's 93 years old and it's my turn. #MrHolmes."
Bill Condon, who also directed McKellen in Gods and Monsters will be at the helm of this movie. Condon worked on the script with Jeffrey Hatcher (The Duchess) for this new Sherlock movie.
Mr. Holmes is actually not based on any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books on Sherlock. It will be instead adapted from the 2005 novel called A Slight Trick of the Mind by author Mitch Cullin.
The story takes place in 1947. The famous detective is now 93-year-old and living out his retirement in Sussex, England by engaging in the practice of beekeeping, which he credits as the secret to his long life.
His researches on beesknees leads him to Japan, which has just gone through World War II. He meets the son of anBritish diplomat, which sets him on the trail of another case that might be his final one.
The movie follows Sherlock in both Sussex and Japan, and it also brings in elements of the plot of "The Case of The Glass Armonicist," one of Sherlock's unsolved cases that from 1902.
Ian McKellen is joined by Laure Linney as Mrs. Munro, Sherlock's housekeeper. Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, 47 Ronin ) has also signed on as Umezaki, a Prickly Ash plant expert who is visited by Sherlock.
The movie Mr. Holmes will hit theaters in 2015.
