After the back of back announcement of players not joining the US National Basketball team, the group felt the need for additional heads in order to cover for the loss.
The team has called on forward Rudy Gay to add to the roster of players for the national team. Gay was a member of the USA Basketball's gold medal-winning FIBA World Championship team in 2010.
According to Gay "I actually went to a practice not too long ago. I just realized how much fun I had playing for Team USA, coach (Mike Krzyzewski) and all those guys. To see how Paul George went down, I feel like it's not only for the country but we have to do it for him, too. I just want to be a part of it"
Gay averaged 20 points, six rebounds and 1.3 steals for the Sacramento Kings and the Toronto Raptors last season.
Gay added "I've been a part of USA Basketball and I have a great relationship with Coach K. You can work out as much as you can, but when you're playing against the best talent in the world, it's better."
The decision came in after Kevin Durant made a decision to quit the team due to mental and physical fatigue. Durant has spoken with USA Basketball executive director Jerry Colangelo and Coach Mike Krzyzewski that he is withdrawing from the team.
Aside from Durant, there are other notable players who also expressed their decision to withdraw while others were due to injury. Other player who won't be playing for the team are includes Kevin Love and Blake Griffin. Paul George has also been taken out of the picture after a gruesome leg injury during a practice game.
The team will resume practice on August 14-15 at Chicago. The practice will close with an exhibition game with Team Brazil on August 16. The team's first game in the FIBA World Cup in Spain will be against Finland and this will be on August 30.
Team USA will need to work on their game play now that another player has been added to the roster.
