Which smartphone is better for consumers? We pit Apple's iPhone 4S against the Lenovo A859 to see which device is worth the purchase.

In terms of design and display, the iPhone 4S has a 3.5 inches display which renders a resolution of 640x960pixels and has a pixel density of 330ppi. The screen is covered by oleophobic coating and Corning Gorilla Glass, so it’s scratch resistant. Its dimensions are 115.2×58.6×9.3 mm and it weighs 140 grams.

The Lenovo A859 is 23 grams heavier and a lot taller (142×72.5×9.2 mm) than its rival. It has a 5 inches IPS LCD display with 16M colors, a resolution of 720x1280pixels and 294ppi. There are light and proximity present on this phone with a glossy design.

For the hardware and OS, The iPhone 4S has a 1 dual core Cortex A9 processor, based on an Apple A5 chipset. The smartphone also uses a PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, which matches with 512MB of RAM. It runs on the iOS5, which was upgraded to iOS 7.1.2 and soon, it will receive iOS 8 and its internal memory is fixed at 8/16/32/64 GB.

The Lenovo A859 on the other hand, runs on the Android v4.2 (Jelly Bean) and it features a 1.3GHz quad core Cortex A7, which teams up with a Mediatek MT6582 chipset and a Mali-400MP2 GPU. The smartphone supports 1GB of RAM and hosts 8GB of internal memory, which is expandable up to 32GB.

For the battery and camera specs, the iPhone 4S’s battery is non removable Li-Po with a capacity of 1432mAh (5.3 Wh), which provides 8 hours of talktime on 3G and 14 hours of talk time on 2G. The Lenovo A859 has a bigger battery of 2250mAh, which is also Li-Po, but it offers only 10 hours of talk time.

Both smartphones have rear cameras of 8MP, but the iPhone 4S has more features to offer: autofocus, LED flash, 1/3.2” sensor size and 1.4 µm pixel size, touch focus, geo tagging, panorama, HDR, face detection and video recording at 1080p@30fps. It also sports a VGA front camera which records at 480p@30fps and supports videocalling over WiFi and 3G. The Lenovo A859 features only autofocus, LED flash and geo tagging and has another 1.6MP camera on the front.

The 16GB variant of the iPhone 4S cost $338, while the Lenovo A859 cost around $220.
