Popular Myth Debunked; No Link Between Breast Cancer And Bras

The myth that wearing a bra will give you breast cancer has been circulating for quite some time now.

However, according to a new research in the journal Cancer Epidemiology: Biomarkers & Prevention, women have no need to worry about the link between breast cancer and wearing bras.

"There have been some concerns that one of the reasons why breast cancer may be more common in developed countries compared with developing countries is differences in bra-wearing patterns," Lu Chen, a researcher in the Public Health Sciences Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and a doctoral student in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health, said in a statement.

Chen added, "Our study found no evidence that wearing a bra increases a woman's risk for breast cancer."

The rumors linking breast cancer and bras have been circulating for years now. A book titled "Dressed To Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras" was published in 1995, suggesting that bras increase a woman's cancer risk because they hamper the drainage of toxins through the lymph nodes near the breast, according to CTV News.

Chen and his team studied 454 women with invasive ductal carcinoma and 590 women with invasive lobular carcinoma, which are the two most common subtypes of breast cancer, according to the NY Daily News. A control group of 469 women did not have breast cancer.

All of the women were ages 55 to 74 and postmenopausal.

No matter how many ways the researchers looked at the numbers, they reportedly could find absolutely no link between how often women wore bras and their risk of developing breast cancer. The risk was the same no matter how many hours per day women wore a bra, whether they wore a bra with an underwire or at what age they first began wearing a bra.

"Given very limited biological evidence supporting such a link between bra wearing and breast cancer risk, our results were not surprising," stated Chen.
