Canadian mixed martial artist and the former 3-time Welterweight Champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Georges St-Pierre has a title shot waiting for him if decides to return to fight inside the octagon. This is what UFC President Dana White has in store for the 2006 and 2008 champion.
News has been circulating that the former fighter has plans of returning to the fight scene next year and many are speculating on who would be facing the champion when he returns.
White indicated on Thursday that it would be hard to deny St-Pierre with a shot at the title belt currently owned by Johny Hendricks. Or he can also have a shot at other fights if he chose to do so.
But in the end, the decision will remains on St-Pierre's hands.
White said "It would be tough to deny that GSP comes right back and doesn't fight for the title, you know what I mean? GSP can do whatever he wants. If he wants to come back and fight for the title, or if he wants a fight before that - he can do whatever he wants."
St-Pierre is often referred to as GSP and Rush.
GSP's coach, Firas Zahabi of Montreal's TriStar believes that 33 year old St-Pierre has the desire to fight. He told ESPN that "My personal opinion is he still has plenty of competitive juice in him. I don't think he'll be anywhere near fight shape until he's late-34 -- mid-34. I think he's got a few fights in him but I don't want to speak for the guy. He might retire and no one could blame him."
St-Pierre has for several years been ranked as the #1 welterweight in the world according to Sherdog, and several other publications. In 2008, 2009, and 2010 he was named the Canadian Athlete of the Year by Rogers Sportsnet.
According to White "It's always a huge debate on a guy who's had a career like GSP - to go out on top and walk away with the belt. That's a personal decision that a fighter has to make. Being the competitor that GSP is, I can't see GSP doing it. But that's up to him."
