It was a great day for Jeff Gordon. After starting off the season with thoughts of retirement, here comes 43 year old Gordon winning one of the elimination races for Chase.
The four-time NASCAR champion who also won the races in Kansas, Indianapolis, Michigan and Dover for this season alone is now talking about his latest win.
This is Gordon's 100-Victory race. He said "I don't think we're going to get to 100 this year. But I hope we get past 93. That would be pretty awesome to get a couple more"
Gordon has now secure another sport for team Penske in the Chase, what wasn't so sure was that Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne was coming along for the ride.
Kahne was lucky to get past the 400 miles, after falling four laps back before he rallied for a 20th-place finish to nab the 12th and final spot in the field.
According to owner Rick Hendrick "Kasey made it a pretty long day. We were watching the monitor at the end of the race hoping that we didn't have a caution and Jeff could win it and Kasey could get in. I didn't know exactly how close it was going to be until I watched that monitor."
Kahne had a rough ride during the trail but kept his cool throught the race. He said "I never really got nervous at all and I just raced real hard the whole time. Kenny started telling me we were tied for 12th and this was with 30 to go. Then he would tell me we were one point in and then maybe two points in, and then he wasn't positive. Then I started getting a little bit worried, so it was intense inside the car."
Now, Gordon will be joining fellow Chase winners Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano being the three drivers who were guaranteed a berth in the next Chase round with victories.
He said "'I think it makes a statement of what type of team we are. I think that it makes a statement that we're a team to beat for this championship."
