Klaus goes through an emotional epiphany about his mother, Elijah takes on a new disciple, Hayley gets tempted by mortality, and Esther finally reveals her twisted plans for her children this week. Read on for 'The Originals' season 2 recap of episode three!
Esther invites her children to a dinner party, effectively putting Elijah and Klaus in alert mode. Klaus goes on a trip down memory lane as he retrieves a talisman that Esther gave him when he was a boy. The starling necklace was meant to be a protection talisman for younger Klaus.
It is later revealed that the brothers plan to use the pendant for a spell to determine which witch Esther will possess when she leaves Cassie's body. To make this possible, they need a witch to make the spell. Elijah makes a deal with Marcel in order to meet his new witch friend. He reluctantly agrees to teach newly turned Gia the ways of a vampire. Will she be a possible love interest for the original?
Elijah and Gia go to see Lenore to talk about the spell but as soon as they leave, Finn (in the body of Vincent) abducts the witch to torture her for information. Oliver (who Hayley put up as Esther's spy) quickly informs Hayley about Lenore.
'The Originals' season 2 recap continues with the Klaus and Elijah preparing for the dinner with their mother. Before Esther could arrive, however, the eldest Mikaelson, Finn, exposes himself. Kho is absent, presumably still looking for Divina.
During dinner, Klaus realizes that the starling necklace that Esther gave him as a child was not meant to protect him from evil. It was actually a talisman to keep him from killing anyone and activating the werewolf gene as a result.
As the confrontation escalates, Esther starts to look weak and remorseful. However, it was only because she was on the verge of jumping into another body. She quickly possesses Lenore, who had been finishing the spell that would help them recognize Esther in her new body - by a distinctive symbol on her hand.
Esther, in Lenore's body, offers Hayley a chance to become "normal" again. She lures her with a promise of more children should she accept her offer. Just as Hayley starts to respond, Klaus and Elijah appear to save her.
Esther escapes, but not before revealing her plans for her children - to get rid of their vampirism and become a family again. Talking to Finn, she reveals the missing pieces of her plan, which is to make Klaus and Elijah so miserable that they would have no choice but to beg her for mortality. Is Esther really so consumed with love for her family that she would do anything to make her children humans again?
With sneak peek photos for 'The Originals' season 2 episode 4 featuring Nina Dobrev as the first doppelganger, Tatia, already out, viewers can expect more flashbacks and glimpses into the Mikaelson family drama and her connection to the brothers.
