A 24-year-old British woman reportedly stopped breathing during a procedure at a clinic in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday, stated an official, according to BBC News.
Although the prospects of getting "cheap" cosmetic surgery can be irresistible to most, it may be important to note the added risk that may come with receiving surgery in a place that's foreign to you, given that there are already so many risks involved in getting surgery of any kind, according to consultant plastic surgeon Michael Cadier, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
"This tragic case highlights how, if lured by the prospect of what is essentially 'cheap surgery,' patients can be left vulnerable," stated Cadier, according to The Guardian.
He continued, "Standards for healthcare may vary, and patients frequently undergo 'consultations' with company representatives who have no medical background, and are therefore not being given the appropriate knowledge in order to give informed consent."
In this recent case, the doctor who allegedly performed the operations, Sompob Sansiri, was reportedly not certified for cosmetic surgery in Thailand, stated Boonruang Triruangworawat, director-general of the Health Service Support Department, according to Yahoo News. The woman had reportedly undergone cosmetic surgery at the same clinic in Thailand earlier this month, but wanted to have a corrective operation when she wasn't satisfied.
She reportedly died after receiving an anesthetic during the operation, stated Triruangworawat.
"There was an attempt to resuscitate her but ultimately she did not survive. We are looking into why it happened," stated Triruangworawat.
The clinic has reportedly been shut down for 60 days.
