Hollaback Takes Down Catcalling With [VIDEO]: Clip Receives Backlash

Hollaback is a non-profit organization aimed at taking a stand against everyday street harassment and catcalling, according to the Irish Independent.

Hollaback reportedly recently uploaded a video which showed actress Shoshana Roberts, dressed in plain black jeans and a t-shirt, walking around New York City for ten hours while a hidden camera documented every instance of catcalling and harassment she had to face.

Despite the fact that the video was made to fight against catcalling, Roberts has reportedly become the subject of online abuse with some users reportedly resorting to rape threats, according to Hollaback director Emily May.

May reportedly explained that the threats and the backlash that the catcalling video is getting means that the charity is "hitting a nerve."

"We want to do more than just hit a nerve though, we want New Yorkers to realize that street harassment isn't OK, and that as a city we refuse to tolerate it," May told Newsday.

May added that her office has received about 10 threatening phone calls while Roberts continues to receive disturbing emails that she is reporting to the police, according to NY Daily News.

"Unfortunately, the behavior that we see on the streets, we also seen online," May told the Daily News.

She continued, "We were horrified by what we were seeing but we weren't shocked. It's part of the culture. It's part of something we're looking to change the root cause of so people aren't harassing on the streets and on the Internet."
