A 35-year-old man decapitated his 66-year-old mother and dumped her corpse in the street before stepping in front of a Long Island Rail Road train and killing himself, according to the NY Daily News.
Patricia Ward was reportedly killed by her son Derek Ward inside the family's Famingdale, L.I apartment, stated Nassau County police Det. Lt. John Azzata on Wednesday.
Ward reportedly used a knife to kill and behead his mother, who used to work as a former professor at State University of New York-Farmingdale, then dragged her body and head outside before committing suicide. According to the police, the murder weapon was reportedly recovered.
Derek Ward reportedly had a psychiatric record dating back a decade and was carrying a Smith & Wesson pistol and 100 valiums when he died on Tuesday night, stated Azzata. Before the son killed his mother, the two lived in the apartment where the murder took place for about three months, according to the Times Union.
Police reportedly had no record of any domestic complaints while neighbors didn't report any sounds of arguing before the killing, stated Azzata.
Dale Silverman, a medical editor who lives in the same Long Island community, was reportedly driving away from the station before the police arrived.
"I saw what I thought was a head in the street. I saw long, black, straight hair and the head face down. And I did a double-take. And I opened the window and said, 'No, that can't be what it is,'" stated Silverman.
Others reportedly didn't think that this was a murder case.
"At first, everyone thought it was like a Halloween prank," stated neighbor Barbara Smalls.
She added, "This doesn't happen here. This is a very nice, nice neighborhood. People are very friendly."
