The defender sustained the problem during the Champions League defeat to CSKA Moscow on Wednesday.

The problem is not thought serious but it could put Kompany's participation in Belgium's upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier with Wales in doubt.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Kompany - an ever-present in the Premier League this season - would definitely miss the match, along with key midfielder David Silva and full-back Aleksandar Kolarov.

Pellegrini's side is coming into the match on the back of a hugely disappointing result and performance against CSKA, and the Chilean was keen to draw a line under the 2-1 loss.

"I think it's very important to divide up the competitions in which we are playing," said Pellegrini.

"We will fight for qualification in the Champions League and we have six more points to play for. We will return our mind to the Champions League after the international break when we play Bayern.

"But at this moment we turn the page because it is very important to continue in the Premier League in the way we have been. We have won four of our last five in the Premier League and it's important to keep adding points - so all our minds are on the Premier League."

City are third in the table, six points behind leaders Chelsea but have already lost to Stoke and West Ham in an inconsistent start to their title defense.

"It's difficult to progress in the Premier League when you won the title last year, but we are trying to continue to fight for it," he said.

"I don't know if you can take many conclusions when there are still 28 games to play. It's a lot of games and we're just in November. We were in a worse position at this time last season.

"In the Champions League we have to take conclusions when we finish the group and, of course, if we don't qualify then it will be a step back but we can't talk about things when we don't know if they will happen."
