What happened on "The Newsroom" last week?
On "Oh Shenandoah," last Sunday's episode, "Will's jailed for contempt, but still won't give up the name of Neal's government source; Charlie goes along with Pruit's order to cater to younger viewers by sending Don to investigate a sexual-abuse case at an elite college; Sloan objects to a new digital site; Jim and Maggie are stranded in a Russian airport, but try to book seats on a plane bound for Cuba so they can interview a noteworthy passenger."
What should we look forward to for tonight's finale episode of the series (S03E06)? Warning: spoilers ahead!
USA Today chooses "The Newsroom" series finale as one of its top picks for Sunday night viewing, writing "Aaron Sorkin's series ends a shortened run that has to be considered disappointing - but perhaps shouldn't be called disastrous. We live in a tweet-fueled world where everything is either awesome or awful: the best thing anyone has ever done or an abomination to be mocked and derided. Well, some things are just - OK. And some things simply don't work, despite the best efforts of talented people. It isn't the end of the world, and it shouldn't be the end of TV careers."
According to the Detroit Free Press, "Three seasons ago, "The Newsroom" arrived as another Aaron Sorkin TV series with lightning-speed banter and the confident righteousness of his critiques on the media and politics. It wasn't "The West Wing" reborn exactly, but it was interesting stuff with a major plus - Chelsea's own Jeff Daniels as fictional cable news anchor Will McAvoy, a man who speaks his mind despite what his bosses think. At 9 p.m. Sunday, the HBO drama bids farewell with its final episode, and it's leaving amid a flurry of controversy over last week's campus rape storyline. And spoiler alert: A big twist last week involved a favorite character's death, a fate possibly spurred by the ratings-goosing strategies being introduced to the network. Leave it to Sorkin to make a departure marked by intense disagreements over his show's content and applause for its blatant editorializing on behalf of journalists fighting metaphorically for their lives."
Care for some more spoilers about the series finale show?
"Sunday night's finale has the challenge of wrapping up all of the major stories, but this will be complicated further due to the heavy specter of Charlie Skinner that hangs over the entire story. His death changes everything at "News Night." It complicates Will McAvoy's future, and the entire way that news is done. Basically, he was the only thing that stood in the way of Pruitt running wild, and doing what he wanted to the division. In the [preview] video, you can see Will McAvoy and Mackenzie McHale struggling to figure out how they want to move on, what to say to honor the head of ACN's news division, and also what their own legacy will be. It does appear that Will may have at least one more show on the air in him, but who knows what will happen after that? Unfortunately, what we can tell you for the time being is that this is not going to be a story that runs for a considerably longer amount of time than usual. While it would have been great to have a 90-minute finale just to have some more footage to look back on, this episode is instead running only 66," continues Carter Matt.
