French Toast Crunch: More Whole Grains And Less Sugar, National Rollout In January

French Toast Crunch used to be a favorite cereal for 'kids of all ages,' because it reminded us about French Toast and maple syrup. No one knows why French Toast Crunch was pulled off the shelves eight years ago, but General Mills is reintroducing the French-themed cereal. The timing couldn't have been better since cereal sales have been dropping with so many alternative breakfast options like English muffins, Pretzels and Danishes making headway in the competition for 'on the run' breakfast choices.

According to a press release from General Mills, the food company "explained that the return of the product had to do with the "passionate fans [who] created a 'Bring French Toast Crunch Back' Facebook page, gathered thousands of online petition signatures, and contacted the General Mills customer service center in droves with calls and e-mails."

The Atlantic noted that the French Toast Crunch recall came at a time when U.S. France relationship was strained. French products were considered 'snobbish.' Now that political ties between the two countries are better, it's a fitting time for French Toast Crunch to return.

All this time French Toast Crunch was still available in Canada, a French colony. General Mills noted that French Toast Crunch addicts in the U.S. would spend as much as $20 a cereal box to get the product from Canada.

"The new French Toast Crunch will have less sugar than the original and more whole grains. It will be in some stores this month, with a national rollout in January. General Mills, which last month cut its sales and profit outlook for the year, also announced changes to other cereals. The company said it gave Cinnamon Toast Crunch a stronger cinnamon taste," The New York Times reported.
