We reported last time that "Despicable Me 3" will be released in 2017 so we need to wait for more than two years before we can see Gru, the cute kids and the minions on the big screen again. Thankfully, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment decided to make a spinoff of the movie.

They called the new film the "Minions" and it will focus on the origin of Gru's yellow buddies. The official trailer of the "Minions" was released last month and here we can see the single-celled organisms evolve through time - from the Jurassic Period to the Napoleonic Wars.

The last scene of the trailer showed Kevin, Stuart, and Bob heading to New York. According to the plot, "The trio embarks upon an adventure that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world's first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind...from annihilation."

Since there isn't any teaser yet for "Despicable Me 3", the spinoff gave us a sneak peek of what happens in The Big Apple. The footage showed the three minions arriving in New York 42 years B.C. (before Gru), which revealed that they weren't created by the secret agent.

The "Minions" movie will help us understand more about Gru's adorable assistants, but there isn't any news yet if Steve Carell's character will appear in the film. Apart from Sandra Bullock, it's been confirmed that John Hamm, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan and Allison Janney will join the cast.

During an interview with Collider, the 52-year old actor revealed why he's excited filming the sequel of "Despicable Me". He said, "I love it. I think the movie itself is an evolution. It's a natural extension of the first movie, which I thought was smart."

Steve Carell added, "The characters changed and grew, no pun intended, but at the same time the sense of the movie feels familiar. The tone of it is the same as the first one, but the family is different." Catch the "Minions" on July 10, 2015 and see how they will evolve in "Despicable Me 3". Check out the sneak peek below:
