USA Today chooses tonight's special as its top pick for Tuesday night viewing, explaining "NBC teams with One Direction for this behind-the-scenes documentary, staged comedy, and music that follows the band on its tour of South America and into the recording studio, with a stop in Florida for a special concert for a few select fans. In other words, it's an hour of One Direction, which is either all you need to know or more than you want to hear." The LA Times agrees, writing "The members of the band One Direction - Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson - present their first network TV special, providing a candid look at the group via documentary and performance footage drawn from the South American leg of their recent tour."
According to the New York Daily News, "One Direction shot their first-ever TV special one day after the most controversial event of their career. On Nov. 17, Matt Lauer set off a fire-storm when, during "The Today Show," he asked if missing member Zayn Malik couldn't make the interview because of problems with substance abuse. The others guys said he had a stomach flu. Twenty-four hours later, Malik rejoined his four bandmates and, according to the special's producer, Ben Winston, he performed gamely. "There was nothing to that story whatsoever," says Winston. "It was just Matt trying to make a headline, which is a shame. These are guys with their heads screwed on, who are thoroughly responsible." That's the image Winston and the band hope to reinstate with "One Direction: The TV Special," which airs Tuesday on NBC at 8 p.m."
"Besides the live footage with a resurrected Malik, the one-hour program also features comedy bits, some fan interactions, and glimpses of their tour earlier this year in South America. That last element includes a trip by the guys to Rio's "Christ The Redeemer" statue that almost didn't happen. "They wanted to see one of the wonders of the world, but you soon realize they can't leave the hotel, since there are tens of thousands of fans outside," says Winston. Suddenly, Winston got the idea to stick the guys into the hotel's bread van and smuggle them to the site. "It was just the five guys, me and the camera," Winston says. "There were no windows and no air. And it's HOT in Rio. They had about five minutes of tranquility before kids found out and we had to get out of there." The live footage of the show gives the group their first chance to perform songs from the new "Four" album live. The club setting for the taping in Orlando also makes it rare. "It's more intimate than the other shows, where it's 80,000 people," Winston says," writes the NY Daily News.
