Fans of the 1985 adventure flick have been wondering if "The Goonies 2" will ever push through. Last October, Richard Donner revealed that he is planning to do a sequel with well known producer Steven Spielberg. The director told TMZ, "Steven came up with the idea of doing a sequel after thirty years." He added, "We've been trying for a while, and then he came up with another story line. He's right on."
Donner was also asked if the original cast will return to the sequel. The 84-year old filmmaker said, "God knows, it's up to them. If they have any sense they will, if they don't they won't." Hearing that statement from the director himself got many fans excited. Imagine seeing Mike (Sean Astin), Mouth (Corey Feldman), Brand (Josh Brolin), and Chunk (Jeff Cohen) together on the big screen again. That would be awesome.
However, it seems that "The Goonies 2" won't be happening anytime soon. During an interview with Collider, Frank Marshall revealed the real status of the sequel. He said, "It's in discussion. [Richard Donner] He's talked to us about it, and we've talked to him. It's all about the story. We don't just do sequels to do them. The story has to be there."
The website tried to confirm to the "Jurassic World" producer if there isn't a new script yet and he agreed. Frank Marshall has collaborated with Steven Spielberg in the past so there's a huge possibility that he will work with him in "The Goonies" sequel. However, the producer isn't willing to do a sequel without a good story.
Marshall said, "You don't want to disappoint the fans by just doing a schlocky movie. You want to do a real legitimate movie. It's not going to be a sequel. In the Amblin spirit of Goonies, that's what has to be." He revealed that it took him more than 14 years to make another "Jurassic Park" movie because he waited for the perfect story.
The 68-year old film producer knows that movie goers are more demanding now and expect a lot from sequels. Frank Marshall said, "I believe that the audience wants to discover the movie in the movie theater. I don't care what you say, with all of the leaks, I think it's a spoiler. You want to see Star Wars like you saw Star Wars the first time when you had no idea, or Back to the Future or Goonies or Bourne. You don't want to know what's coming."
Do you think we will finally see "The Goonies 2" in the near future?
