What do Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and Kanye West have in common? It turns out the "Dark Horse" singer pegged Taylor and Kanye as sweetheart and villain, in that order.
Katy Perry had plenty to say in a recent interview with Elle Magazine, commenting on pop as soap opera, on stardom, and on a handful of the music industry's biggest big shots.
Perry hinted at Britney Spears' previous meltdown in a comment about fame and stardom. The singer said both are the opposite of what her childhood dreams were made of.
"It is a hundred times harder a dream than the dream that I dreamt when I was nine. You think you signed up for one thing, but you automatically sign up for a hundred others. And that is why you see people shaving their f*cking heads."
Perry also compared the industry as ongoing soap opera, and it's only appropriate music artists are pegged with roles to play, whether they like it or not. She compared Taylor Swift to the classic sweetheart, and Kanye West, the villain.
"You've got to name someone the villain, someone the princess, someone the mom-[type], the dad-type - you know there always have to be characters," Katy said.
"As pop figures, we're all characters. And the media uses that. Who is the sweetheart, who is the villain? You know. Taylor [Swift's] the sweetheart. Kanye [West's] the villain. That's the narrative."
Perry expects Sunday's Super Bowl performance a nerve-wracking experience; she had to let go of the control she's used to having in her own shows.
Unlike her shows, Katy says that "with the NFL, I have to be accountable to several levels of red tape. There are many committees I have to go through for my costumes, the budgets of my show, every interview - everything, I have to report to somebody."
Katy's Super Bowl performance on Sunday pits her on the stage on one of the biggest sporting events in the US. She failed to comment on her role in the soap opera she casted Taylor Swift and Kanye West into, though. Check out Katy Perry's cover interview here.
