Ashton Irwin may have been linked to Kendall Jenner and currently dating rumored girlfriend, Bryana Holly, but when he was in school, he wasn’t the most desired fellow amongst the ladies.

During an interview with Top of the Pop magazine, Irwin and the other 5 Seconds of Summer members revealed that they didn’t experience the popularity and adoration of fans while in school.

“No one cared about us. It makes me emotional just talking about it,” explained Ashton Irwin, according to Sugarscape.

He added, “We’d get cut down. People talked down to us. We didn’t have any other friends, we were outsiders. It was just us four and we were stuck there.”

Although they may not have had girlfriends back in the day, they always had dreams of being “superstars,” according to their former music teacher, Mr. Adam Day.

''The last time I saw them perform live for the school was for the Senior Soiree in 2012,'' Day told the Sydney Morning Herald.

He added, ”They were confident and well-performed, but nothing as out there as what they are doing now. I started teaching them music in year 7, and they excelled in all the practical activities of music but were very quiet and shy and reserved - they were very much closet musos.”

It seems that the boys worked on their confidence quite a bit since leaving school.

“I wrote on their reports back then that it would be good to seek performance opportunities to develop their confidence. They've certainly done that - more than any other student I've ever said that to!,” explained Day.

He continued, “Michael always said to me, 'I'm going to be a superstar one day.’ That was his dream from year 9 on. I remember him coming off-stage from a performance night one evening and he said, 'Yeah, that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to be famous one day. Watch out.'''
