Looks like good news for smartphone users as Nintendo is set to unleash its beloved games and characters to the mobile platform!

Nintendo, one of the most renowned video game companies headquartered in Kyoto, Japan, is set to finally bring its beloved games and characters to the mobile platform after years of speculation.

According to FOX5News, the Japanese video game giant is teaming up with Japanese app developer DeNA to create new game apps based on existing Nintendo characters like Mario Bros., for mobile devices.

The huge announcement was made during a joint press conference hosted by DeNA CEO Isao Moriyasu and Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

This is a significant move for Nintendo as the company has resisted making its games available on tablets and smartphones, solely focusing on selling its own handheld devices and consoles. In the wake of console sales declining, mobile gaming is now one of the biggest sources of growth for the video game industry.

The video game giant said of the alliance in a statement that it is intended to complement the company's dedicated video game systems business as well as extend Nintendo's reach in the vast market of smart device users across the globe.

NeoSeeker noted that Nintendo will not simply port existing titles to smart devices, but instead, will create new games, highlighting the differences in controls between gamepads and touch screens. Although Satoru Iwata noted the decline in sales of the Wii U and 3DS, he said Nintendo is still committed to supporting those platforms.

Iwata did not specify which Nintendo franchises will be going mobile.

Nintendo has reached a deal with DeNA to create new games and a membership service that will hopefully launch in the fall. FOX5 News noted that members will be able to play the new games on Nintendo systems such as 3DS and Wii U, mobile devices and PC.

Nintendo is buying 10 percent of DeNA's shares for a whopping 22 billion yen ($182 million). DeNA too will invest around the same amount in Nintendo stock.
