After playing an exiled princess in the historical drama "Shine Or Go Crazy," Oh Yeon Seo is ready for more challenges.
"I want to try a lot of characters, said Oh in a recent interview with the Korean media outlet Sports World. "For example Na Sang Il from the drama 'Fantastic Couple.' I watched 'Miss Granny' recently and Sim Eun Kyung was so cute. I also feel a Chinese historical drama might not seem like a bad idea. It's fancy and it would be an experience for me."
Oh did not get to be "fancy" for all of "Shine Or Go Crazy." Although her character really was a princess, she spent much of her time disguised as a man. But her first saeguk won her over, especially the way historical dramas portray the precarious urgency of love. It was as easy to fall in love in previous centuries but much more difficult to marry the person you loved. A marriage choice was dictated by so many factors: family alliances, political affiliations, and class distinctions. Your life was ruled by the way genders were expected to act.
"The historical setting makes it more desperate," said Oh Yeon Seo. "In modern dramas, you can meet someone else right away, but in a historical, you're set with someone and it's not easy to change partners due to the status systems and fight for authority. It's like the end of the world. I think those thoughts made it easy for me to concentrate."
But despite her new interest in the romance of historical dramas and films, more than anything she just likes to act. Movies? Dramas? She can do it all.
"An actress shines when she's acting," she said. "I always want to work and I am always prepared."
Oh Yeon Seo made her debut in 2002 when she was only 16. She did not debut as an actress but rather as a member of a short-lived group LUV with Jo Eun Byul and Jeon Hye Bin. She has her first acting role in 2003 in the drama "Sharp" but her breakout role did not happen until 2012, when she appeared in "My Husband Got A Family" and "Here Comes Mr. Oh."
She also appeared in the fourth season of "We Got Married," where she was paired up with former MBLAQ member and actor Lee Joon. Before appearing in "Shine or Go Crazy" with Jang Hyuk, she starred in "Oh Jang Ryeong Is Coming" and "Jang Bo Ri Is Here." She often plays sophisticated characters in her modern dramas
