Traveling back to 1997 was so successful for the producers of the drama "Reply 1997," they have decided to take the audience even further back in time. They set the second season in 1994.
The drama, "Reply 1997," became a surprise hit in 2012, generating record-breaking 6% cable ratings. It centered on the lives of five friends in Busan, who meet at a high school reunion dinner. The 16-episode story moved back and forth between their lives, starting when they were 18 in 1997. It ends in 2012 when one couple announces they are getting married.
Part of its appeal was the way it examined the fan culture that first emerged in the 1990s when idol groups such as H.O.T were popular. The series soundtrack featured music by H.O.T. and DJDOC.
The second season will be set in 1994 and will feature various topics that were popular then. There are plenty of rumors. Some say that music by Seo Taiji and Kim Gun Mo and popular dramas of the time, such as the basketball hit, "The Last Match," will be featured.
According to a statement by tvN, "Although basketball will be covered, it won't be the main focus. "We don't even have the synopsis yet. We're going to melt the various topics that were popular back in 1994."
While the show is still in its planning stages, one thing is certain. The second season will feature director, Woo Ji Won, and writer Lee Woo Jung, who worked on the original season. As of yet, no actors have been cast.
Netizens are not sure that a second season can live up to the first as no sequel has ever done as well as the original series. Others said that the success of the original series was due to actress A Pink's Jung Eun Ji and she is not likely appear in the second season.
"Reply 1997" also starred Seo In Guk, Shin So Yool, Infinite's Hoya, Eun Ji Won, and Lee Shi Un. The series earned a variety of K-Drama Star awards, including Best Couple Award for Seo In Guk and Jung Eun Ji, Rising Star awards for both Seo In Guk and Jung Eun Ji and Best OST.
Seo In Guk and Jung Eun Ji also won 2012 Style Icon Awards and 2012 Korea Drama Awards for Best Couple.
