Not only did a recent edition of "We Got Married" go global, the variety show has become a mega hit in China. This week, MBC's "We Got Married: Global Edition," got more than nine million views when it was posted on the Chinese video site iQiyi. That earned the show about pretend marriages the #1 rating for a variety show.
It's not surprising since the show features a popular Chinese actress and two Korean idols that are well known in China.
The show, which is distributed in 22 countries, stars international celebrity couples. F.T. Island's Lee Hong Ki, who appeared in "You're Beautiful" is paired with Japanese actress Fujii Mina, who appeared in "The King of Dramas." Taiwanese actress Wu Ying Jie, also known as Gui Gui, who appeared in the Taiwanese series "Summer Fever," has to pretend-marry 2PM's Taecyon, who starred in "Dream High."
During every episode, the couples must complete a new challenge that highlights the difficulty of becoming a couple. If you don't actually know each other before "getting married," the adjustment can be difficult. On top of that, the actors involved come from different cultures.
One thing Tacyeon and Wu do have in common in that they both started their careers as singers and then moved into acting. Wu speaks English, Japanese and Chinese, while Taecyeon speaks English fluently. Fujii speaks English well, while Lee speaks some Japanese having appeared in a Japanese drama.
During recent episodes of the show, Gui Gui got to show Taecyeon what she looked like in a wedding dress. She was nervous because she had never modeled a wedding dress for a man but Taecyeon was really impressed.
"Gui Gui looks really good in a wedding dress," said Taecyeon. "I don't think mere words can describe how good she looks."
Netizens pointed out that they looked good together, so good that they might as well "just get married."
While they were getting ready for the big day, Lee Hong Ki and Fujii played with fireworks, shared some wine and cooked together. Lee tied Fujii's apron for her. But the most touching scene in any of their episodes, say fans, was when he serenaded her. His singing brought her to tears.
The OST for the show will include romantic music by Lee Hong Ki, Taecyeon, Park Jung Hyun, Position, K.Will, Navi, and MBlaq as well as "Sunshine," a song by B1A4.
