A representative from Sony Pictures has confirmed that the movie "Popeye" was not cancelled. What is the status of the adaptation of the animated movie?
There are several online portals denying the news, but a spokesperson from Sony Pictures contacted Jerry Beck of Animation Scoop to give the in details of the live-action movie.
"Genndy has been developing both Popeye and his original idea Genndy Tartakovsky's "Can You Imagine?" (temp title) at the same time while directing "Hotel Transylvania 2,"Jerry cited his source.
The spokesperson from Sony went on to say that when the Sony Pictures started planning these movies they wanted to release "Popeye" first. However, Genndy Tarakovsky's "Can You Imagine" was put in the front and then it was reportedly scheduled as Genndy's next film at Sony Pictures Animation.
"That said "Popeye" is still very much in active development," the spokesperson allegedly said.
Even Wikileaks leaked about the development of "Popeye," via Animation Scoop. Wikileaks revealed that Sony Animation Chief Bob Osher e-mailed Sony President Amy Pascal to support Gendy's version of sailor-man.
The leak that dated November 13, 2014 unveiled Genndy Tartakovsky's struggle and problems to have the film pushed through. The 45-year-old Russian director, Genndy was concerned about Sony's commitment to "Popeye."
When Sony released a test animation of "Popeye" to the public, the fans gave a positive response. Bob Osher implied that the movie would be a box-office success once released.
"I think a word of support from you would be helpful," Osher reportedly said.
Since the spokesperson confirmed that "Popeye" is still in development, this give fans an assurance that the film will release in the near future.
In December 2013, Wikileaks also leaked "Popeye" movie plot in which Popeye would set on a voyage to find his father. However, one Sony executive said that the plot lacked emotional or compelling connectivity. Sony Picture Animation is yet to release an official statement.
