Kim Soo Hyun Goes Back To School—And Not For A Role

After becoming the most famous Hallyu star in Japan and breaking box office records with his new film, "Secretly, Greatly," there was only one challenge left for Kim Soo Hyun to face. He decided to re-apply for university.

The actor recently applied to several universities at once, including Chung Ang, Hanyang, Sungkyunkwan, Gungook, Geonggi, Kyunghee and Seokyeong universities. On a community website, he recently posted how nervous he was about the whole admission process. Even though none of the schools have rejected him yet, he admits that the worrying is giving him insomnia.

"I've been chosen for second interviews," he said. "I'm working hard to get ready for the questions they will ask me. Hopefully, I will have the right answers."

He aced the exams in "Dream High." Why wouldn't a university want him? Oh, wait, that was a drama role.

In real life, Kim started acting in high school and began to dream of becoming a professional actor. So, he applied and was admitted to Chung Ang University, where he majored in film and theater. But after he made his acting debut, his professional schedule made it difficult to focus on his studies. He has had small roles since 2007 but was soon cast in larger roles, becoming a star thanks to his "Dream High" and "Moon Embracing The Sun" performances.

He considers himself a school repeater and cautions other students against going the same route.

"Don't repeat school twice, three times and a fourth time," he said. "You will become like me."

But there is some truth to his performance in "Dream High" being an indication of how well he might do in university. When he applies himself, he works hard until he learns what he needs to know. He was the only young actor in the "Dream High" cast without musical experience. That meant he had to study song and dance for three months to play the part of the country boy turned super star. He practiced singing and dancing for hours every day until he could hold his own among the idol cast. And he aced it.

One thing that might be a problem in school is his handwriting, which is notoriously bad. In a scene for his movie, "Secretly, Greatly," the left-handed actor had to write a note. His writing was pretty illegible.

"I took my midterm a while ago at school and had to write a report," said Kim. "I did my best and turned it in but the next day the professor called to ask me what I wrote."

Hopefully, the university that accepts him will let him type up his reports.
