Lee Seung Gi will return to the small screen but not in a drama. This time he returns to the variety show format with an appearance on a new show "Road Trip Project 2."
As a cast member, he will accompany a set of travelers on a backpacking trip. And he will be reunited with his old friend Na Young Suk. The show is the brainchild of Na, the man who produced "1 Night, 2 Days."
Lee Sung Gi was a permanent member of the first season of "1 Night, 2 Days," participating in the show from 2007 to 2012. "1 Night, 2 Days" became the longest lasting and most loved variety show in the history of South Korean entertainment. In 2008, Lee received a popularity award for his contribution to the show's success. He also earned a Top Excellence MC award from KBS and a Daesang award for his part in the show.
After his participation in "I Night, 2 Days" ended, Lee was so busy that he did not have a chance to miss it. But once he finished filming the historical fantasy drama "Gu Family Book," he realized that despite the acclaim and great ratings that his drama earned, something was missing from his life.
"Once every week I used to come out to the broadcast station and could talk to my heart's content but since that ended I couldn't so I started talking more in my everyday life," he said.
Lee never stopped wanting to work with Na again. When Lee heard that Na was producing a new variety show, "Grandpas Over Flowers," in which older actors take a road trip around the world, Lee asked to appear on it. But his filming schedule prevented his participation.
Na's program "Grandpas Over Flowers" was very popular but scheduling conflicts meant it could not continue for another season with the same actors or in the same format. Instead, Na has launched "Road Trop Project 2." And this time Lee Seung Gi was able to clear his schedule to take part.
What's different about this road trip variety show? On "Road Trip Project 2," four of the cast members will be actresses but they won't necessarily be grandma-age. Among them will be actress Yoon Heo Jung, who played Lee Seung Gi's mother in the drama "King 2 Hearts." Another one of the cast members will be Kim Hee Ae, who starred in "Midas" and "A Wife's Credentials."
