At a recent press conference for the film "No Breathing," Lee Jong Suk said that he no longer had any problems with singers trying to become actors.
Having worked with Superstar K winner and "The Master's Sun" second lead Seo In Guk and Girls Generation's Kwon Yuri, he was impressed by their talent and the way they breathed life into their characters.
"Throughout the film, I worked with Seo In Guk and Yuri and at first I did think of them as singers," he said. "I have to admit that I had some prejudice against singers who act but now that prejudice has completely disappeared."
He praised Seo In Guk's ability to make his character, competitive swimmer Won Il come alive.
But those who know Lee Jong Suk's background might guess he was probably trying to be funny when he said he was ever prejudiced against singers who become actors. He has admitted to being tone deaf.
Before his acting breakthrough, an agency wanted to train him as a singer. He became the youngest member of an idol group.
"After training for three months I ran out," he said.
And he did not really perform the song his poor musician character sang in "Secret Garden." He was just lip-synching.
"I can't sing well," he said. "On 'Secret Garden I failed many times, so they wound up using someone else's voice."
The musician whose voice they used was newcomer named Len. Lee said that one day he would like to sing and Len was an artist whose songs he would like to cover.
Despite Lee Jong Suk's lack of singing ability in "Secret Garden," that role launched his acting career and this year he had his biggest success ever playing Park Soo Ha in "I Hear Your Voice."
After Lee complemented Seo In Guk, the singer-turned-actor returned the praise.
"Lee Jong Suk has more acting experience than I do," said Seo, who previously appeared in "Reply 1997" and "Love Rain." "I learned a lot from him. While filming, we supported and encouraged each other.
The film tells the story of two swimmers who compete on a national level and both like the same girl, played by Kwon Yuri. Seo in Guk already knew how to swim but Lee Jong Suk had to take lessons. He was however a quick learner.
"In my personal opinion our breathing was excellent," said Seo In Guk of their swimming techniques.
Maybe some day he can teach his co-star how to sing.
