Actress Lee Chung Ah brightened the set of the movie "The Five" both with her onscreen performance and on-set personal interactions.
And given the potentially grim plot it was probably a movie that needed a few bright spots. The thriller centers on the character Eun Ah, played by Kim Sun Ah. Eun Ah is a woman who watched her family be killed and was also molested. She plans her revenge against the killer and enlists five people to help her.
Because she's damaged physically and mentally, she needs their help to exact revenge.
Everyone in the group needs an organ transplant, so she makes a deal with them, pledging her internal organs as a guarantee. Lee Chung Ah is one of those desperate characters. And yet Lee managed to inject some sunshine into the moviemaking.
"Lee Chung Ah was the most cheerful person on set and we were all jealous of how pretty she was," said her co-star Kim Sun Ah at a press conference for the film. "She provided a contrast to the rest of us who were darker grimmer characters."
But maybe some of the brightness of her onscreen character had to do with movie lighting.
"Because of the nature of Lee Chung Ah's character, she's the only one who got to use the reflector for close-ups," said Kim Sun Ah. "Park Hyo Joo and I were always a little jealous that whenever Lee Chung Ah came on screen, it was beautiful, but when we were on, it was dull."
But then Lee Chung Ah admits that she is now in a much happier place than when she first debuted and perhaps happiness makes her shine more brightly. She mentioned her relationship status as she is dating her "Flower Boy Ramen Shop co-star Lee Ki Woo.
"First of all, I'm in my 30s now," said Lee Chung Ah. "I've learned from my difficulties over the years, and now that I'm in a relationship a lot has changed."
"The Five" is Lee Chung Ah's first thriller. She appeared as the lead in "Flower Boy Ramen Shop," had a cameo on "Dating Agency: Cyrano," and now appears as Oh Da Jung in the weekend drama "Wonderful Mama."
"I wanted to show another side of myself so I decided to do a thriller," said Lee Chung Ah. "It's an opportunity to broaden my range as an actor and I'm planning on desperately promoting the movie."
The film is based on the web comic, "The Five," and Jung Yeon Shik, the webtoon's author served as the director. Bringing the webtoon accurately to life is a responsibility he would only trust himself with. "The Five" received an award for being the best webtoon and was named the must-read cartoon of the year.
The film also stars Ma Dong Suk, Oh Joo Wan, Sin Jung Geum, and Jung In Gi. It will premiere Nov. 14.
