The Korean drama 'Boys Over Flowers' is based on the brand Japanese shōjo manga series. Penned by famous writer Yoko Kamio, the story tells us about a normal high-school girl who crossed paths with an arrogant rich heir and his equally vain group of elite friends. This drama was one of the most popular shows in South Korea. It broadcast 25 episodes on KBS2 starting on January 5, 2009 up until March 31, 2009.
"Boys Over Flowers" introduced us to Gu Jun-Pyo (played by Lee Min Ho), the wealthy and arrogant heir and leader of the group known as the F4, the four handsome boys who rule the esteemed Shinhwa High School. He is always escorted by his three equally rich, handsome and popular friends and crew members namely Yoon Ji-Hu (Kim Hyun-Joong), So Yi-Jung (Kim Bum), and Song Woo-bin (Kim Joon).
The story starts when one day, F4 bullies a boy who was about to take his life by jumping from the rooftop, then, Geum Jan-di (Ku Hye-sun) was there at the scene and prevented him from doing so. Because of her fearlessness, she receives a scholarship to attend the prestigious school where F4 goes.
Geum Jan-di's family has a dry cleaning business and she lives a simple life in a small home with her parents, Geum Il-bong and Na Gong-joo, and her one and only sibling, her brother Geum Kang-san. As soon as she enters the said school, she develops a loath feeling for the nasty F4 boys. Because of her strong personality, Jan-di does not fear to stand up against Gu Jun Pyo and this causes Jun-Pyo to single her out.
As their paths began to cross unexpectedly, Gu Jun-Pyo starts falling in love with Geum Jan-di. Meanwhile, the leading lady begins a romantic inkling toward one member of the F4 group, named Yoon Ji-Hu.
Eventually, Jan-Di found out that Ji-Hu is actually in love with his childhood friend who is a famous model Min Seo-hyun. Having a lot of love triangles and complications, the drama "Boys Over Flowers" follows these main characters as they go through romance, friendship, and relationships. So, who do you think ends up with whom? If you haven't watched this gem of a drama, you're missing out. Watch this series to find out!
"Boys Over Flowers" season 1 premiered on KBS way back January 5, 2009. After having 25 episodes, it ended with its finale on March 31, 2009. It was aired for its US audience on KBS America and as of the moment, all the episodes are available on Netflix.
"Boys Over Flowers" gained extremely large viewership ratings after its premier in South Korea, making a K-drama wave all throughout Asia. The cast members of this drama became famous overnight and the show even garnered amazing international recognition, resulting in its broadcast in other several countries.
But despite the fame and praise received by this drama even after almost a decade, the creators have not given any definitive news about a renewal or a season 2. If they decide to create a second series, we would hope for the continuous story in the same timeline. The creators may have to scout for new, fresh faces. If a sequel is being decided to release, it will have to either showcase a jump across the years. If ever we hear or receive any update on the "Boys Over Flowers" Season 2, we will surely update you guys.
