Now that singer BoA has set her sights on acting, she has no intention of turning back. Last year the actress appeared in a Hollywood film, before making her Korean debut. Then she had a role in a drama special. And now she is considering a part in "Big Match," a Korean film.
"It's one of several productions that have sent in offers," said her agency, SM Entertainment. "It's true we received a casting offer for 'Big Match,' but nothing has been decided yet."
If the singer takes a role in the techno-crime thriller, she will join a cast that already includes Lee Jung Jae, Shin Ha Kyun and Lee Sung Min. Lee Jung Jae will play a martial arts star that is framed for murder. Shin Ha Kyun is a game planner who uses technology to turn a whole city into a big game board. Lee Jung Jae will jump into the game to save his brother. There's no word yet on what role BoA will play.
Before this year, Kwon Boa, whose stage name stands for Beat of Angel, had only done a single voice over in a film. She dubbed the voice of Heather the Possum in the Korean and Japanese versions of "Over the Hedge." Then she appeared as the dancer Aya in the Hollywood film "Make Your Move 3D."
"Make Your Move 3D" was an indie dance film starring BoA and Derek Hough of "Dancing with the Stars. It also featured a cameo by Yunho of TVXQ. It was shown in Europe and Scandinavia this year, with plans for a U.S. release in the spring. It has not been shown in Korea.
Selling 10 million records during her singing career did not necessarily make BoA feel confident about acting. Even after appearing in the film, the actress was nervous about acting in the two-episode romantic comedy, "Expect Dating" with co-star Daniel Choi. It was her first time acting in Korea.
If she was nervous about taking the role, so was Lee Eun Jin, the comedy's producer. When she did her first script reading he thought that she might not work out, but as time passed he was impressed by her dedication. When filming was done he praised her for a good first effort and thanked her for her enthusiasm.
Fortunately, the reviews were positive and experts generally agreed that she has what it takes to succeed as an actress.
"Big Match" is scheduled to start filming next month with plans for release in the second half of next year.
