‘Sinkhole’ Outshines ‘Escape from Mogadishu’ in Box Office During its Premiere

Cha Seung Won, Kim Sung Yun, and Lee Kwang Soo's new movie "Sinkhole" reached a massive achievement during its premiere.

According to Yeongjinwi integrated computer network, the disaster comedy film has accumulated 154,665 on its first day, making it the best opening record for a Korean movie this 2021.

Not only did it garnered over 150,000 moviegoers, but it also beat Jo In Sung's "Escape from Mogadishu" in the box office, making it slide down to the second spot.

To recall, the action drama film, which was released on July 28, has amassed 126,672 visits on its debut.

Recently, multiple outlets noted that "Escape from Mogadishu" is nearing the two million viewers mark on its second week of showing, raking a total of $14.5 million as reported by Variety.

In addition to the film's achievement, Lotte Entertainment recently announced that the action-packed movie had been sold to 50 countries, including Germany, North America, Belgium, the Netherlands, Morocco, and Japan.

Helmed Kim Ji Hoon, who is the man behind the 2012 disaster movie "Tower" the recently debuted film depicts the story of Park Dong Won, played by Kim Sung Kyun, who just moved to a newly built Chungwoon Villa.

He managed to acquire the property after 11 years of hard work; unfortunately, an unforeseeable accident happened after the estate fell into a sinkhole with its residents trapped inside.

With Dong Won are his fellow residents Kim Seung Hyun, portrayed by Lee Kwang Soo, and Jung Man Soo, played by Cha Seung Won, a part-time worker and single dad who struggles to raise his son.

The plot thickens as the trio looks for ways to survive the sinkhole, which is about 500 meters underground.

Aside from the said actors, the "Sinkhole" cast includes Nam Da Reum, "Kingdom" actress Kim Hye Joon, veteran actor Kim Hong Pa as department head Seo, Lee Hak Joo as Deputy Jung, while Ko Chang Seok, plays the rescue captain.

During the press conference, PD Kim Ji Hoon shared his thoughts regarding the movie stating the difference between his previous film "Tower."

"If Tower was a thrilling survival story that takes place in a high-rise building that catches fire, Sinkhole is a more optimistic disaster movie that takes place in an underground setting," he explained.

In addition, the renowned director mentioned that rather than highlighting the natural disaster, the movie showcases "how people deal with the situation and go through it together."

On the other hand, Kim Sung Kyun revealed the challenging part of filming the movie.

During his recent interview with Sports Seoul, the "D.P" actor mentioned that "Sinkhole" was the "most difficult work" that he has ever done, adding, "but in that sense, it's like a medal of 'I did it.' I was surprised that I could endure this," he mentioned.
