'The Handmaiden'
Probably the most controversial work in the list is Kim Tae Ri's debut film "The Handmaiden."
Based on the 2002 English novel "Fingersmith" by Sarah Waters, the movie showcases the story of Sook Hee (Kim Tae Ri) and Japanese heiress Lady Hideko (Kim Min Hee).
Sook Hee is a pickpocketer who was hired by conman Fujiwara (Ha Jung Woo) to persuade Lady Hideko to marry him, in order for him to steal her wealth.
Set in the Victorian era, "The Handmaiden" is a psychological thriller film that depicts the forbidden romance between Sook Hee and Lady Hideko, and their sensual meanderings as they explore one another.

"The Handmaiden" was nominated for the most coveted prize in the Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d'Or. It was also selected as one the first ever Korean films to be recognized at the British Academy Film Awards.
