Lee Min Ho says he has never cried as much in any drama as he did in "The Heirs." In the latest episodes, after he is separated from Park Shin Hye, he has a lot to cry about. And while he did a good job of looking miserable, he may not win the award for the most tears shed in a kdrama.
There are many kinds of crying in dramas with efforts ranging from a single silent tear streaming down an actor's face to that face becoming puffy and swollen with sobbing. How do they do it? Usually actors can bring up the tears by remembering sad events in their own lives or their own regrets or fears. Some are better at it than others. And a few are not afraid to look terrible while weeping.
Yoon Eun Hye is one actress that knows how to shed tears and is not afraid to look her worst while doing so. She cried buckets in "Missing You" with and over her equally tear-stained co-star Park Yoochun. Based on their work in that melodrama, those two should get an award just for crying so well.
Hwang Jung Eum is another actress that is talented at shedding tears and despite her character's strong optimistic personality she had a lot to cry about in her hit melodrama "Secrets," as her loyalty brought her only pain.
Lee Min Jung blubbered effectively in "Big" when her character found out that her husband had probably been cheating on her. So did Seo Woo who played Moon Geun Young's stepsister in "Cinderella's Sister," when she was suddenly forced to grow up.
But it's not just actresses. One of the best things about in kdramas is that men cry too and kdrama actors are not afraid to cry up a storm.
Men obviously do cry in real life but rarely on camera. That is one of the things that distinguish kdramas from entertainment in other parts of the world.
Whether viewers are watching Jang Geun Suk cry about his mother's rejection in "You're Beautiful" or Jung Woo Sung cry about his unjust imprisonment and illness in "Padam Padam," seeing a character shed tears does help you relate to them. A few other kdrama actors that broke viewers' hearts with their tears were Gong Yoo in "Coffee Prince," Hyun Bin in "Secret Garden" and Kim Soo Hyun in both "Dream High" and The Moon Embracing The Sun." Yeo Jin Goo, the actor who played Kim Soo Hyun's younger self in "The Moon Embracing the Sun" is so good at crying that you have to wonder how someone so young knows such how to summon up misery.
There are only a few more episodes left to "The Heirs." Hopefully Park Shin Hye will dry Lee Min Ho's tears and he won't have to shed too many more.
