Choi Hyun Wook is facing repercussions after he was spotted smoking on the streets in Seoul.

After the backlash from netizens, the "Twinkling Watermelon" star gets penalized for illegally disposing of a cigarette butt.

In a report obtained by a news portal, a civil suit was filed at the Gangnam District Office against the up-and-coming actor for the illegal disposal of cigarette butts, tissue, and more.

This incident was caught on camera after a video of Choi Hyun Wook went viral.

Due to this, the 21-year-old actor was fined 50,000 won, or around $37.22 USD, for violating the Waste Management Act.

Per the report, a representative from the Gangnam District Office says that the video was sufficient evidence to confirm that the actor violated the law.

"He violated Article 8 Paragraph 1 of the Waste Management Act, and the payment of a fine was processed," the representative cited.

Amid the issue, Choi Hyun Wook's agency, Gold Medalist, responded to the update and confirmed that the actor has completed the payment for the fine.

"After confirming the footage, we looked up the fine procedures, and the fine payment has been completed," the statement reads.

Moreover, the label also apologized on behalf of the actor for "causing concern" due to his behavior.

However, netizens were more concerned about him smoking outside the designated area.

In addition, he was also spotted illegally disposing of the cigarette butt on the ground.

Following the backlash, the actor released a handwritten apology addressing the issue regarding the cigarette incident.

As obtained by a media outlet, Choi Hyun Wook personally addressed the controversy and apologized for his behavior, which caused disappointment, especially among fans.

"Despite the need to be responsible at all times, I have disappointed many people with my reckless actions," he added.

Moreover, the actor also took the opportunity to say sorry to his colleagues, the team, and drama officials that he worked with and promised to reflect on his actions.

"I will humbly accept the criticism and advice that you have given me, and I will reflect on myself and work hard to show a more mature side of myself in the future," he wrote.

The 21-year-old actor is best known for his roles in "Racket Boys" as Na Woo Chan and Moon Ji Woong in "Twenty-Five Twenty-One."

He also headlined the series "Weak Hero Class 1" and appeared in "D.P." season 2 as the rookie soldier Shin Ah Wi.

Currently, he stars as Ha Yi Chan in the youth fantasy K-drama "Twinkling Watermelon" with Seol In Ah, Ryeoun, and more.
