Led by South Korean top star Lee Jung Jae, the 9-episode K-drama became a huge hit in 2021. With this, the streaming giant named "Squid Game'' as Netflix's biggest show yet, garnering over 1.65 billion viewing hours, 28 days after the show's premiere.
The Korean series was also nominated and won various awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Oh Yeong Soo at the Golden Globe Awards, followed by Lee Jung Jae's Best Actor in a Drama Series, and Best Director for Hwang Dong Hyuk at the Primetime Emmy Awards.
With a ton of achievements and the continued success of "Squid Game," the Korean series has attracted the attention of key Hollywood players.
'Squid Game' Speculated To Have A Remake: Who Will Direct and Write the Adaptation?
In a report, rumors sparked that a "Squid Game" remake is happening in the future, and will be helmed by American director David Fincher. He is an award-winning director and known for his works with psychological thrillers. Among his famous works are the Netflix series "House of Cards" and "Mindhunter."
Interestingly, the filmmaker has reportedly been developing the American version of the Netflix series and "working quietly for the past two years."
Joining director David Fincher is British writer and producer Dennis Kelly, who is set to pen the "Squid Game" remake.
The report also mentioned that Fincher had an exclusive deal with Netflix for the prequel series of "Chinatown," but it was put on hold because of the global success of the K-drama, for which they intend to have an adaptation.
As for the "Squid Game'' remake, Netflix officials are yet to respond regarding the speculations of a possible remake.
Meanwhile, Netflix's co-chief executive officer, Ted Sarandos, hinted that there wasn't a development for a remake.
"Since the main series is still ongoing, there's no justified reason for Netflix to do a remake," he said in an interview in February 2024.
