The Japanese adaptation of "True Beauty" is getting hate comments from netizens after outlets confirmed the plan for the drama to be released.
First premiered in 2020, starring Moon Ga Young, Cha Eun Woo, Hwang In Yeop, and Park Yoo Na, the rom-com fantasy K-drama, which is also based on a popular webtoon, was well loved by viewers at the time.
The story centers around a high school student who gets bullied and discriminated against because of her looks.
To hide her features, she conceals her imperfections through makeup, and with her skill, she transforms into a girl with goddess-like beauty.
She then befriends two fellow high schoolmates. One comes from a wealthy family but has a cold demeanor, while the other is an aggressive student full of talents.
At the time of its broadcast, the 16-episode series was among the most talked-about K-dramas, despite not getting a double-digit rating on viewership.
Interestingly, it was also the drama that made Moon Ga Young and the rest of the "True Beauty" cast skyrocket their fame globally.
This might also be the reason why Japanese broadcast networks expressed their interest in remaking the series, hence the upcoming adaptation.
'True Beauty' Japanese Adaptation Selects KoKi as the Lead Star
Following the news surrounding the Japanese remake, reports cited that Koki, a model and songwriter, whose real name is Kimura Mitsuki, will be headlining the "True Beauty" remake.
Interestingly, the upcoming J-drama will be her debut on the small screen after starting her acting career in 2019 with "Eternal Love," followed by the horror film "Ox-Head Village" in 2022.
Fans are thrilled to see KoKi portray a challenging character as she transforms into a completely different person through her role in "True Beauty."
However, amid this, the Japanese adaptation has been receiving mixed reactions from the public.
'True Beauty' Japanese Remake Gets Online Hate Following the Announcement of the Female Lead
On social media, netizens expressed their honest opinion regarding the upcoming remake of "True Beauty."
Unfortunately, not everyone is thrilled to see the rom-com get a Japanese adaptation, with others pointing out that it didn't deserve the hype.
Other than "True Beauty," several K-dramas were remade in different countries.
Japan also did Park Seo Joon's "Itaewon Class," which they called "Roppongi Class," as well as the iconic "My Love From the Star," which had Japanese, Filipino, and Chinese adaptations.
As for Hollywood, Lee Jung Jae's "Il Mare" had an international version through "The Lake House." The same goes for the hit movie "Sassy Girl," which also had the same name.
