Fifteen years after the premiere of "Boys Over Flowers," the K-drama is renowned not only for its influence on the Korean entertainment industry but also for a series of tragic fates and scandals surrounding the cast.

The series, which first aired in January 2009, brought fame to previously little-known actors but was soon overshadowed by tragic events allegedly linked to the show.

Death Curse

The first tragedy struck shortly after the series' success. On March 7, 2009, just days before a scene featuring Ja Yeon standing up for herself was broadcast, actress Jang Ja Yeon tragically took her own life by hanging herself in her home.

Prior to her death, she wrote a seven-page letter accusing her manager of coercing her into providing sexual services to influential clients. While the police did not confirm the actress's claims then, the scandal deeply affected the country.

Ten years later, after the premiere of the series, it turned out that they were true, and new judicial proceedings were launched to punish the remaining villain.

In late 2023, fans were shocked once again when Moonbin, a member of the boy band ASTRO and a child actor who played Jae Kyung in a series, was found hanged in his house in Gangnam.

His death was classified as suicide. The deceased was discovered by his bandmates. The band was set to perform in the country soon, and Moonbin was one of the most anticipated performers.

According to his colleagues, the boy saw the band's work as his prison, but nobody knew that because he was very kind and smiley, which shocked everyone even more.

Jeon Ki Sang, the director of "Boys over Flowers;" was the only one who had not ended his life but had died in a car accident in January 2018. He was well-known for his work on various successful series.

Love Curse

The cast members' romantic lives have also faced challenges. In early 2020, Goo Hye Sun, the wife of Ahn Jae Hyun, first accused him of neglect, then later accused him of the same, before reconciling and then ultimately filing for divorce.

Evidence later surfaced that portrayed Goo as controlling, leading to a shift in public sentiment against her.

Kim Hyun Joong has had over a hundred lawsuits initiated by his pregnant girlfriend for assault.

The legal battles continued until 2015 when he reached an agreement to settle the matter out of court, the financial details of which were not disclosed but were rumored to be in the millions. Lee Min Jung parted ways with Lee Byung Hun, whom she married in 2013 after he failed to keep his promise of fidelity.

In 2014, he requested an investigation into his relationships with two other women, E and S, to whom he had given an engagement ring and a marriage ring, respectively. Despite this, Lee Min Jung forgave him and gave birth to their first child in 2015.

Lee Min Ho faced a scandal in China where false accusations were made against him on TikTok, which had no basis in reality. Chinese analysts labeled Lee Min Ho as a high-ranking member of an elite pedophile network.

"Boys Over Flowers" is a series that has left a lasting impact, revealing that the lives of its cast members are far more complex than they appear at first glance.
