Singer Kim Jong Kook has faced backlash for comments he made on a recent airing of SBS variety show "Running Man," where he told broadcaster Jonathan what his wedding gift to fellow entertainer Jo Se Ho would be.
On the show, Kim mentioned during a discussion of his wedding: "Jonathan was at Jo Se Ho's wedding and gave almost nothing for a congratulatory gift money, then stuffing his face with food."
While it was meant to be a throwaway gag, the quip drew backlash from fans who deemed it in poor taste.
But some netizens frowned at this and said, "The economy is already not good; let's not push young people too much."
One user wrote: "It is inappropriate to judge a guy in his early 20s, like Jonathan, on how much he gave at a wedding — which is already an expensive and draining event to attend.
Kim's supporters argued that he was just joking and trying to be funny. "It's just a variety show. Is that criticism this serious justified?" another netizen remarked.
On October 20, Jo Se Ho tied the knot with a non-celebrity bride nine years younger than him at Hotel Shilla Seoul.
The wedding became extremely popular as many celebrities such as Yoo Jae Suk, Kim Jong Kook & Jonathan were present, along with other stars like Lee Dong Wook, Gummy, and Taeyang.
There has been considerable interest from public discussions about the gift money sums given away by celebrity participants as well as their fashion styles.
