Actor Yoo Yeon Suk is facing criticism after remarks he made in a previous appearance about what women wear resurfaced, prompting a days-long social media storm.
While promoting his then-movie "Mood Of The Day" with co-star Moon Chae Won, he was asked about appropriate outfits for a date.
His remarks suggested that women should wear see-through clothing to indicate their interest in a man.
"If a woman wears such see-through clothes when going on a date with me, I would think she is interested in me," Yoo stated. "Otherwise, if she wears it discreetly, she doesn't like me.
Yoo's comments were relatively ignored by Moon Chae Won, who reportedly wears turtlenecks and pants most of the time.
She was whispering to the host about her displeasure, which did not go unnoticed. Yoo then jokingly shot back, "That's why you don't have a boyfriend," only exacerbating the awkwardness of what had just taken place.
The incident was trending soon on social media platforms, with netizens expressing their views.
Yoo was widely chastised for his apparent objectification of women, as well as his suggestion that how a woman dresses determines if she is interested in a man.
Some defended him, saying he was just sharing a preference for how he likes to date.
The comments hurtled towards social media, such as:
"It's rude! How can you say such things?" and some said, "This is just his opinion. Everyone has different tastes."
Yoo Yeon Suk gained fame by acting in notable drama series, including Reply 1994, Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim, and Hospital Playlist.
He is currently starring in the new hit K-drama "When the Phone Rings.
This particular incident has gotten people questioning our cultural views about women and what they choose to wear during dating; even if this isn't the first time men have had a hard time understanding the line between dating and work when it comes to women, despite him being an industry veteran at this point.
