As Squid Game turns its eyes toward a third and final spin around the board, fans of the money-making Netflix series are abuzz with anticipation and theory.

With the show debuting on 27 June, new clues hinting at the VIP characters—who proved so divisive in the last series—have fans hopeful but fearful.

The introduction of VIPs in season one split fan opinion. Their inclusion felt so out of place with the tone and vibe of the rest of the show that many criticized them for ruining the experience.

Many welcomed their exclusion from the show's second season.

A never-before-seen first-look image (shown above and released by Netflix) shows the Front Man in the VIP room, possibly from Season 1.

Some fans hope that the stage will leave room for returning characters. This image is vague, but it has led to speculation about what their return would mean for the series' end.

Nick Valdez, a ComicBook commentator, said: "There's a potential bright side. If they get their just desserts, the return wouldn't be as bad as their first time around."

When it comes to Squid Game itself, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk suggested that what we have seen so far may not be the last.

Hwang told Variety, "When I first wrote the story of Seasons 2 and 3, it was one long story arc. I wanted to have an adequate point where I could give closure as a second season and then move on with the third."

With fans counting down the days until the final season, some are asking for a resolution that ties up the story, including Gi-Hun's battle against the system he conquered.

However, time and the influence of the VIPs' return in this finale can only tell if this holds and titillation is going off the charts.

All the while, Netflix is ready to drop the other shoe early next decade, turning over the final thread of "Squid Game" and whatever associated drama and suspense will follow — or not — at that point.
