South Korean actor Lee Jung Jae has spoken out about the polarized response to the globally popular Netflix hit Squid Game Season 2. He revealed the creative reasons for its contentiously portrayed conclusion and suggested that future episodes could do better.

Speaking to Mael Korea, Lee — returning as Seong Gi Hun — said that he's aware of the mixed reactions towards the sequel.

It may be its cliffhanger ending that he believes has brought on some of the negative reviews.

Lee added, "In hindsight, I do question if we should have left it there. We went with the former because the latter would have meant waiting to finish all 13 before we put them out—and we didn't know when we would be done with them: next year, maybe?"

The choice to drop the episodes was intentional, Lee noted, in order to keep with the format of the first season.

However, he felt that Netflix and the showrunner took a long time to think about this approach to it.

Lee responded to the criticism with a measured response and said it was a part of the entire process.

"No project escapes space without criticism, right? This is entirely normal and expected, something we experience all the time," he said.

"Which is why I recommend you pay attention to every input."

But there may be some good news on the horizon for fans, as Lee said some of the concerns voiced may be mitigated in post-production on the show's third season.

"And, as there is a post-production season three, I wanted to view this as a learning opportunity — we can still improve on this stuff, even in final edits," he said.
