Samsung Gear 2 Fit sealed in Samsung's lead entry of new mobile devices at the MWC 2014, claiming the 'Best Mobile Device" in Barcelona.
Many smartwatches have already been released including Pebble, Sony, Fitbit among others. Samsung was fortunate to unveil the Smartwatch at the 2013 MWC, which gave the device maker just enough time to jump on the bandwagon of slightly better smartwatches and fitness devices a second time around in 2014. And certainly, Samsung is trying to improve the concept and function of wearable fitness band combined with a smartwatch.
The Gear Fit is not the first to enter this space in fitness. When the Galaxy S4 was launched, the S Band was a fitness band that was talked about during the S4 launch. However, there is no evidence the S band made it to the market - even if it did, it was sold in small numbers.
So Samsung modified its game to combine a smartwatch with a fitness band and the end product is the hybrid Fit. This fitness accessory comes with all the fitness linked accroutements, such as sleep and exercise monitoring, a pedometer a stopwatch and a timer and a heart-rate checker.
Taking a closer look at Samsung's Gear Hit is half the width of the Galaxy Gear and is seated higher on your wrist. And the slightly beefed up plastic housing goes around the screen so it doesn't get in your way.
Samsung deserves credit for using technology to the fullest: the Fit's curve grips the top part of the wrist and trails the curve of the arm. The shape and visuals are seamless and natural.
Since Samsung is developing gadgets with a futuristic twist, the Fit fits in well with its products.
Looking at the screen, it looks exceptional though it offers a resolution of 438x132. At just 2" inches long, the screen is still quite vibrant at this resolution.
The Fit works by using taps and gestures, while the elongated design and a curved screen tightly fits the curved smartband design and this is in contrast to the square styles on current smartwatches.
All you have to do is swipe left and right to select apps and menus.
Mashable's Christina Warren writes that the Fit would combine well with the S5 if the hardware can be purchased for $100. Samsung's Gear Fit is expected to unveil on April 11th worldwide.
Samsung's Official global blog, Samsungtomorrow.com said in a statement after the Fit had won the 'Best Mobile Device' at the MWC2014 , 'The Samsung Gear Fit was designed to comfortably contour to consumers' wrists while offering a vivid Super AMOLED display. It provides much more than an everyday fitness band, keeping consumers up to date instant notifications from Galaxy smartphones such as incoming calls, emails, SMS, alarm, S-planner, 3rd party apps while consumers are on the move so they can stay connected. Changeable straps in Black, Orange and Mocha Grey will let users express their individual style, changing the look of the Gear Fit to match their outfit or mood for any type of activity."
Michael Crider of Androidpolice.com writes, "The Fit has no telephony, no integrated microphone or speaker, no camera, no infrared blaster. Those who want a mini smartphone on their wrist will be mortified at this lack of utility, but it's kind of the point: like the Pebble, the Gear Fit has very little that it doesn't actually need to have. It does three things: collect fitness information, relay notifications from your smartphone, and (oh yeah) tell time. I think this focused approach to function is one that actually follows form, and one that will please more users than the larger Gear designs, especially if the price is right."
