She would have dated them but instead she wound up playing their mom. Still Kim Sung Ryung has no regrets about the maternal roles she played with Lee Min Ho and Hyun Bin.
On a recent episode of "One Night of TV Entertainment," Kim Sung Ryung, 47, was asked which of her co-stars comes closest to her ideal type.
"I would date Lee Min Ho and marry Hyun Bin," she said. "I want to give love to Lee Min Ho but I want to be loved by Hyun Bin."
But alas, she did not even get to date or marry them onscreen as she played their moms.
She also said that she was jealous of actress Kim Hee Ae for getting to film "A Secret Love Affair" and having an onscreen romance with a man so much younger than her.
Kim Sung Ryung played Lee Min Ho's biological mother in the drama "The Heirs." And she plays Lady Hyegyeong, the biological mother of King Jeongjo, played by Hyun Bin, in the film "The Fatal Encounter."
The film's story focuses on King Jeongjo, a lonely Joseon-dynasty king who had to protect himself from assassination attempts. At least playing Hyun Bin's mom turned out to be a lot of fun.
Kim said that she liked to joke around with her Hyun Bin and once even parodied the foam kiss from "Secret Garden" for him. Instead of a cappuccino upper lip mustache, she had a beer foam mustache. It did not earn her a kiss but she did get some laughs out of Hyun Bin.
Kim Sung Ryung also played a mother in "You're Beautiful" and in that drama she was a terrible one. She was Jang Geun Suk's mother, the one who deserted him and could not even remember he was allergic to shrimp.
She finds it easy to relate to younger actors. She became friendly with DBSK's Yunho when he appeared in the drama "Yawang,"
"Yunho is the person I missed the most after I finished shooting the drama. He's not only like a son but also like my little brother. Even if you talk to him only once, he will open up to you."
The two exchanged texts after the drama ended.
Besides her role in "The Fatal Encounter," this year the actress also plays detective Young Joo in "The Target."
According to the Korean Film Council, "The Fatal Encounter" sold over three million tickets in less than two weeks. It opens in the U.S. on May 23.
