Italy's head coach Cesare Prandelli waved his white flag after losing to Uruguay during the elimination rounds of the 2014 FUFA World Cup. This is the second consecutive time that Italy was not able to proceed to the knockout rounds of the World Cup. Their early exit signaled the decision of Prandelli to leave the team.

It was actually Prandelli who salvaged the team after their unsuccessful stint in the 2010 world cup and led the to the Euro 2012 finals. He replaced Marcelo Lippi as the head coach after Italy finished last Group F of the 2010 World Cup.

According to Prandelli regarding his decisions to resign "I chose a certain technical plan and that's why I am resigning, because it did not work. Something has changed since my contract was renewed. I don't know why."

He has also submitted his resignation to President of the Italian Football Federation's, Giancarlo Abete, as well as to the vice president, Demetrio Albertini, saying that his resignation is irrevocable. He said that the decision was made way before the team pushed through the world cup in Brazil.

It has been noted that he had just signed his contract last May and will end till the Euro 2016. But besides Prandelli, Abete has also joined him in resignation.

President of the Italian Football Federation stated "I would like to announce my resignation. I do hope that at the forthcoming meeting of the board they can persuade Cesare to reconsider his position."

According to Prandelli's post match conference "I talked to the president of the federation and gave my resignation. The technical set-up didn't work, and I take all responsibility for that. Something has changed since my contract was renewed. I don't know why. I chose a certain technical plan and that's why I'm resigning - because it did not work."

He added "'A second European Championship, third at the Confederations [Cup] and the qualification obtained in advance should not be under-estimated. The match was well-balanced in equal numbers, but the sending-off changed it all"

With Prandelli resigning as well as the Italian Football Federation President gone, what would be the future of football in a country that is so passionate about their sports?
