Although the race was dominated by Italian Vincenzo Nibali, the French were all happy seeing two Frenchman on top of the podium. Jean-Christophe Peraud and youngster Thibaut Pinot both finished second and third during the finale run which ended in Paris. Another Frenchmen who came in close to the race was sixth placer Romain Bardet. This is the first time in 30 years that France had two French winners on the podium.
Though veteran cyclist Jean-Christophe Peraud may retire from the race, Thoibaut and Bardet still has a long way to go.
When the 24 year old Frenchman, Pinot, was asked whether there is a possibility for another Frenchman to be the top winner of the race, he answered "it is possible, yes, but in the two or three coming years we're going to be too short. I'm still far from Nibali, I'm more than eight minutes behind him. But in 2012 I was 18 minutes behind (overall winner Bradley) Wiggins." He added "But Romain (Bardet) and I still have 10 years to ride so there is time."
Pinot and Peraud has been support continually by their sponsors. Pinot's FDJ.fr team has been in the sport since 1997 while Peraud and Bardet's Ag2R-La Mondiale team started their involvement in cycling in 1992.
FDJ.fr manager Marc Madiot said with regards to this "When they arrived they just asked us not to do anything stupid."
Jean-Christophe Peraud is supportive of co-frenchman Pinot saying "Thibaut (Pinot) is the symbol of the renewal of French cycling. It shows that tenacity and hard work pay off."
Pinot's racing history has been impressive. Finishing his first Tour in 2012 in 10th place overall, he became the youngest top 10 finisher since 1947. On the other hand Bardet was 15th in his first Tour last year.
Another Frenchman who is slowly making waves in the game is Warren Barguil. Barguil last year won two mountain stages in the Vuelta at the age of 21.
Now that the Tour de France has ended a lot will be speculating whether the Frenchmen will have their shot at winning the top spot for the race. But one thing is for sure, they are surely moving up the ranks on their way to the podium.
