Jeff Gordon was victorious enough to have a Jeff Gordon Day in Indianapolis, and he made sure he proved he deserved a holiday named after himself.
He just won his fifth Indy Victory for his career. Now, he won the famous NASCAR event. Again.
In terms of record, he was head to head with Hendrick Motosports team mate Jimmie Johnson, but now he surpassed him. He is now in a tie with Formula One legend Michael Schumacher as the most victorious driver for one century and half a decade.
"I don't think there is a greater feeling for a racecar driver and a race team," said the 42- year- old. "I can't believe this just happened."
The race car driver won the inaugural Brickyard 400 when he was just 23 years old, but he did not win any more victories since 2004, but all that changed because of last Sunday's events.
"This is for all those fans through all the years who have said you can get No. 5," Gordon said. "We got No. 5 today."
"I told him this morning, this is your day," Rick Hendrick, team owner said, talking about Gordon. "He has been so good on the long runs at every track and he gets around here so well. For him to break that tie, that's pretty special. We're a little bit older than we were 20 years ago, but it's a great win. I remember how the first one felt, this one feels just as good."
Gordon said, "It's just a big race and such an important victory and a crucial moment in the season and championship and those emotions take over.
"To have my kids here, there is nothing better than to come to victory lane, especially in one of the biggest races with your family here," he finished thankfully.
This is Gordon's 90th career win. He has been a race car driver for more than 20 years.
